Musical Mondays

Music | April 28, 2014

This week’s Musical Monday sees releases from massive names such as Beyonce, Katy Perry and Pharrell. There are also a few long videos but they are well worth a watch. Check out this week’s highlights below:

Beyonce – Pretty Hurts

Queen Bey has released the video for ‘Pretty Hurts’ which will be the fourth single from her smash hit record ‘Beyonce.’ If you are a fan of Beyonce’s ballads then you are in for a treat with this track which shows of her stunning vocal range. The song is a social commentary on the perception of beauty with Beyonce stating that ‘Perfection is a disease of a nation.’ The video reflects the lyrics perfectly, showing the lengths that women go to in order to be considered pretty. ‘Pretty Hurt’ does not yet have a release date but is available on her album ‘Beyonce.’

Katy Perry – Birthday

Katy Perry has gone all out for her latest release ‘Birthday’ which has a lengthy eight minute video. The song is pure pop and the music seems quite similar to Katy’s 2011 hit ‘Last Friday night (T.G.I.F)’ however the lyrical content is full of unsubtle innuendos. The video takes the song’s title a lot more literally. Katy goes undercover in a series of costumes to cause chaos at several birthday parties and a bar mitzvah. Overall it’s a fun song but hopefully its contents will go above some of Katy’s younger fans. ‘Birthday’ is out now and Katy will begin her ‘Prismatic World Tour’ next week.

Lilly Allen – Sheezus

Lily Allen has never been one to hold back and with her latest single ‘Sheezus’ is no exception. The title track from her third album is all about Lily trying to make it back into the charts. Beyonce, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Lorde are all name checked but it is meant as a complement of their success rather than being disrespectful.  Lily is the focus of colourful close ups in this video, it looks cool but it is a lot more scaled down compared to past efforts. ‘Sheezus’ is out now and the album of the same name will be released on May 5th.

Tinie Tempah – 5 minutes

Things have been quiet on the Tinie Tempah front lately, but he has made a noisy return with ‘5 Minutes.’ This track comes from his album ‘Demonstration’ and is full of energy; it makes for a perfect work out song. With the influx of dance music in the charts right now it is good to see a British rapper with a strong release. The video shows a rave in full swing which adds to the songs intensity. ‘5 Minutes’ is due for release on June 2nd and Tinie will be performing at festivals over the summer.

Pharrell Williams – Marilyn Monroe

Pharrell and his wonderful massive hats are back in his latest single ‘Marilyn Monroe.’ It is an upbeat track that Pharrell has described as ‘a love letter to unique women’.  It may not be quite as infectious as his hit ‘Happy’ but this track is still a solid release. In the video, Pharrell’s homage to women is continued as he is surrounded by dancers throughout. Meanwhile Kelly Osbourne also makes a cameo appearance as she lent her voice to a line in the track. ‘Marilyn Monroe’ is out now and is set to appear at Radio 1’s Big Weekend at the end of May.

Music | April 22, 2014

With Easter out of the way, we are heading full steam towards summer and this week’s songs are the perfect party anthems. There’s a lot of dance music this week as house and EDM (Electronic Dance Music) continue to dominate the charts, but it is popular because it is so catchy. Have a listen to all of the tracks below:

1. Kiesza – Hideaway

Canadian singer Kiesza has stormed onto the music scene with her infectious single ‘Hideaway.’ The track has become the third fastest selling single of the year, having sold 136,000 copies in just seven days. ‘Hideaway’ also has an impressive music video, as the whole thing is done in one take. Even more amazing, is that the former Navy sniper reportedly broke a rib just before filming the video, hopefully having a number one single made it worth the pain! ‘Hideaway’ is out now and Kiesza is currently working on her debut album.

2. One Direction – You & I

Love them or hate them, One Direction are unavoidable but at least ‘You & I’ is not as in your face as some of their past singles. This downbeat track is about staying together through the thick and thin. Although it seems like a love song, its lyrics are vague and it could easily be about friendship lasting the test of time. The video for ‘You & I’ is simple, some of the transitions are a bit creepy but it is also quite fascinating to watch. ‘You & I’ is due for release on May 17th and with 10 million views on YouTube already, it is sure to do well.

3. Shift K3y – Touch

Another song new to the charts this week is Shift K3y’s ‘Touch’ which has landed straight at number 3. Having remixed the likes of Tinie Tempah, Bastille and AlunaGeorge you would expect big things from Shitf K3y, however ‘Touch’ is a fairly generic dance track. The single does have a catchy chorus and its video is colourful but not that exciting. At only 20 years old Shift K3y has plenty of time to develop his tunes. ‘Touch’ is available to buy now.

4. Neon Jungle – Welcome To The Jungle

This song may share its title with a classic Guns N’ Roses track but, Neon Jungle’s ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ couldn’t be any more different. This single also includes a rap verse which seems a little bit forced and its content does not particularly suit the group. The video is well styled and fun but not particularly original, it is also a shame that some of the members don’t get as much screen time as others. ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ is out now and the girls debut album is expected to drop later this year.

5. The Kooks – Down

The Kooks have returned after a few years away from the music industry with their single ‘Down.’ It is a different direction for the band, the song has a punchy drum beat and more of a hip-hop influence. The video is well suited to the track, it is edgy with out being too weird. ‘Down’ is available now and the band will be doing a four date mini tour in May.

BassBuds | April 15, 2014

It’s a new week and we’ve got all the latest tunes for you to enjoy. Amongst this week’s entries we have a soundtrack, an electronic duo and solo artist who’s currently in jail…

1. Alicia Keys feat. Kendrick Lamar – It’s On Again

Alicia Keys and Kendrick Lamar have teamed up to release ‘It’s On Again’ from The Amazing Spiderman 2. Also working on the track were mega producer Pharrell Williams and award winning composer Hans Zimmer, who both make cameo appearances in the video. The theme of this song is obviously centred on Spiderman and being a hero. It has a catchy chorus and Kendrick Lamar’s rap verse is intense but slightly misplaced at the beginning of the song. ‘It’s On Again’ is out now and The Amazing Spiderman 2 is in cinemas on April 18th.

2. Lana Del Rey – West Coast

America’s sweetheart Lana Del Rey has returned with ‘West Coast,’ the first cut from her sophomore album.  In less than 24 hours the song has already had more than 2 million views on YouTube, even though the video is just the same 10 seconds of footage on loop. Lana’s voice is as sultry and calming as ever however musically there is a different vibe from her previous work. ‘West Coast’ is set for release on May 18th and the album ‘Ultraviolence’ is due to come out this summer.

3. Disclosure and Friend Within – The Mechanism

After massive success with their debut album ‘Settle,’ Disclosure are back with non album single ‘The Mechanism.’  This track is once again a collaboration, this time with Liverpool based producer Friend Within. ‘The Mechanism’ has a deep bass sound with minimal lyrics, so it is unlikely to be as big a chart success as their previous singles however it should fare well in clubs.  ‘The Mechanism’ is available from April 15th.

4. One Republic – Love Runs Out

One Republic ‘s new single ‘Love Runs Out’ has appeared on line after being held back from their last album. The single was supposed to be the lead single for their album ‘Native’ however, frontman Ryan Tedder decided it wasn’t ready until now.  The track has a slow build which leads up to a punchy chorus, there is also an infectious clapping beat throughout which will keep it stuck in your head. ‘Love Runs Out’ doesn’t have a release date yet but it is available for pre-order now.

5. Chris Brown and Ariana Grande – Don’t Be gone Too Long

He may currently be in jail but Chris Brown has still managed to preview his duet with Ariana Grande ‘Don’t Be Gone Too Long.’ The single is lifted from his forthcoming album ‘X’ which is scheduled for release on May 5, however with his current legal predicament it may be pushed back. For a duet the track feature very little of Ariana Grande’s vocals, she is more of a backing singer. The video is very simplistic, with Chris dancing against a plain backdrop in shadow.  There is currently no official release date for ‘Don’t Be Gone Too Long.’

Fashion: Our Favourite Spring/Summer Trends

Fashion | April 10, 2014

We are officially in spring, and with such gorgeous weather lately we’ve been thinking about all of the latest fashion trends that we can’t wait to wear with our BassBuds. Here’s our top 5 trends for SS14:

1. Shimmer in stunning metallic

Move over floral prints, one of the most popular trends for this summer is set to be metallic. You don’t need to save this trend for the evening either as you can accessorise with pretty iridescent pieces for the day time too. Metallic styles could be seen in the collections of Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford and Just Cavalli.

2. Make a statement with logos and Slogans

Be bold this season with big brands and daring slogans that are easy to wear. Designers such as Christian Dior, Ashish and DKNY all took on the trend in their shows, with Coca Cola being one of the big name brands making it into the fashion world.

3. Radiate elegance in pretty pastels

Pastels never go out of style for spring and they are back again this year. This colour trend is still popular with designers such as Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung and Rebecca Taylor all featuring it in their collections.

4. Go retro with a sophisticated tea skirt

If you struggle to find the balance between a midi skirt and a maxi skirt, then the tea skirt is the perfect solution. The demure full skirt sits between the knee and ankle, which is ideal for the changeable British weather. Oscar De La Renta, Christian Dior and Alice and Olivia all bought the tea skirt out for their SS14 shows.

5. Sparkle with chic embellishments

Embellishment is still going strong and is ever popular this season, with everything from embellished bombers to blouses on the catwalk. Spectacular embellishments could be seen in Marni, Nina Ricci and Balenciaga summer collections.

Musical Mondays!

Music | April 7, 2014

It’s time for a brand new music Monday, if you’re feeling the Monday blues then grab your BassBuds and have a listen to the latest big tunes to cheer yourself up.

Calvin Harris – Summer

World renowned DJ and producer Calvin Harris has returned with the aptly named single ‘Summer.’ It is the first cut off of his upcoming forth studio album. The single is an upbeat summer club anthem that will easily climb the charts with its dance beats and simple lyrics. ‘Summer’ has the world’s most generic music video, with lots of half naked ladies and fast cars being the main feature, but it will probably appeal to the masses. The single is out now and Calvin’s album is expected to follow soon.

Ed Sheeran – Sing

After extensive touring with Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran has found the time to return with ‘Sing.’ This track will be the lead single from his sophomore album ‘x’ (also known as ‘multiply’). It is a slightly different sound from what we are used to with Ed and has distinct R&B tones to it. After a section of Ed singing in a very high falsetto, the beat drops into something much funkier. The video sees Ed playing his acoustic guitar in an empty arena with spot lights focused on him. The full song will be revealed tonight and the new album will be out on June 23rd.

Foxes – Holding On To Heaven

Singer Foxes shot to fame after featuring on Zedd’s hit ‘Clarity,’ but now she is releasing her third solo single ‘Holding On To Heaven.’ This mid tempo track is about holding on to a romance even though she knows it is not the best thing for her. ‘Holding On To Heaven’ has a quirky video that is reminiscent of Zoe Deschanel and Florence and The Machine. It shows two side of Foxes personality a happy and outgoing persona, and a lonely and glum persona. Foxes debut album is due to be released on May 12 and ‘Holding On To Heaven’ is out on May 4th.

Aloe Blacc – The Man

Aloe Blacc is at the number one spot at the minute with his single ‘The Man.’ Having disappearing for a while, he has returned with this empowering anthem which even features a sample of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’. The video is unusually poignant for a pop artist, it references icons such as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. The overall message of the video seems to be fighting for what you believe in and not giving up. ‘The Man’ is out now and Aloe is set to appear on season six of The Voice in America as an advisor.

Clean Bandit – Extraordinary feat Sharna Bass

Following up the success of their track ‘Rather Be,’ Clean Bandit are back with their latest single ‘Extraordinary’ which this time features British babe Sharna Bass. They’ve stuck with their formula of combining electronic dance music with classical instruments and it still sounds fresh and fun. The video sees the group and Sharna having fun in Cuba with the locals, and making the most of the beautiful beaches. ‘Extraordinary’ is due for release on May 19th and the album ‘New Eyes’ will be out on June 2nd.

Musical Wednesday’s – This Week’s Top Picks

Music | April 2, 2014

This week’s musical Wednesday’s is a mix of established stars and up and coming acts, whatever you’re into we’ve got the latest new videos and singles for you to check out. You can see this week’s top 5 below.

1. Katy B – ‘Still’

BRIT School graduate Katy B has unveiled the video for her latest single ‘Still.’ The song is the third track to be released from Katy’s album ‘Little Red,’ which also produced the singles ‘5 AM’ and ‘Crying For No Reason.’ Katy shows an emotional and vulnerable side in this minimalist video which is shot in entirely white surroundings. It’s a song about reminiscing over a past romance and how Katy hasn’t moved on as she still thinks about her ex all the time. The single is out now and you can check out the video below.

2. London Grammar – ‘Sights’

The British trio are back with their brand new single ‘Sights’ which comes from their hit album ‘If You Wait.’ The track is due to be released on June first and is a slow paced ballad which is lead by Hannah Reid’s sultry vocals. London Grammar have already been announced for festivals such as T In The Park, Wilderness and Isle Of Wight so keep your eyes out for them over the summer.

3. Pitbull feat. G.R.L – ‘Wild Wild Love’

Pitbull has released the video for his latest single ‘Wild Wild Love’ which sees him collaborating with girl group G.R.L. In typical Pitbull style the video is set at the play boy mansion and sees him surrounded by scantily playmates, meanwhile the ladies from G.R.L are attempting to get Pittbull to sign up to an undisclosed deal. It’s a very chart friendly track that is sure to do well, however it might have been nice to see Pitbull try something a little bit different.

4. Sam Smith – Stay With Me

Sam Smith is yet to release his debut album but judging by his latest single ‘Stay With Me’ it looks set to be a good one. This down beat track allows Smith’s unique voice to shine and it is complimented beautifully by a harmonious choir. The video for ‘Stay With Me’ tells the simplistic story of how Smith struggles with casual one night stands, but does not want to deal with the pain of being alone. The album ‘The Lonely Hour’ is due out on May 26th but until this single should keep fans satisfied until then.

5. Rita Ora – I Will Never Let You Down’

Rita Ora may have been busy shooting for her role in the upcoming 50 Shades Of Grey film, but she has still managed to find the time to release ‘I Will Never Let You Down.’ The song will feature on her sophomore album which is due for release this year and if this single is anything to go on, it will be less dance heavy but remain chart friendly. ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ is a slightly odd video as it flicks between black and white and bright colour which makes it seem confused. It doesn’t know whether it is supposed to look chic and serious or fun and bubbly. The song will be out in the UK on May 11th.
